Oriental & Modern Rugs
It is impossible to say with any degree of certainty exactly when, where or by whom the first pile rugs were made.
The materials of rug making are considerably more perishable than those of other types of artefacts and therefore very few examples have survived. The earliest collection of rugs was excavated from burial grounds in Egypt and the Orient dating from the 5th century AD
We tend to use the term Oriental or Persian rug when describing rugs that were hand made in the traditional way in places such as Turkey, Afghanistan, India, China, Caucacus and Pakistan.
It is possible to try and classify these through their design, colours, materials and price. The most useful way and the way that we view these rugs is by using the following criteria;
- Country Of Origin
- Weaving type or Machine manufactured
- Dye type used
These enable us to determine the best methods for cleaning and ensuring you receive the appropriate treatment for your rug.
There are many different types of rug, some are machine made and mass produced, other are rare, antique or valuable. We treat them all with the utmost care and attention.
It is advisable to have your rugs cleaned every 12-18 months but if they are in areas of high traffic (entrance halls, corridors etc) or if you have children or pets, they might need more frequent cleaning.
All rugs are wet cleaned, we use the most advanced techniques available to the industry. However some rugs need to be cleaned by traditional hand cleaning methods.
It is preferable to clean rugs in our specially designed workshops, where they can be hung to dry naturally.
Rug Care & Treatment
Rugs have a justifiable reputation for being extremely durable, but they are not indestructible and proper care and maintenance will greatly enhance both the beauty & life of your rug.
Following these simple precautions will help your rug last many years;
- Lightly vacuum the back and front of the rug at least once a week-do not vacuum the fringes
- Leave in the sun once or twice a year with the back of the rug facing the sun to help destroy enzymes
- Beat the rug once a year over a washing line to help remove loose dust & dirt
- Turn regularly to ensure even wear of the rug
- Comb or brush out the fringes using a broad tooth brush
- Use protectors on chair legs or tables to protect the rug fibres
- Have your rug professionally cleaned every 12-18 months
- Consider having your rug protected against spots & spills

Leather Cleaning & Protection
Leather represents a large percentage of furniture sold today. Consumers have quickly realised the benefits of leather. It is more durable than fabric so it lasts longer. Leather adjusts to body temperature making it very comfortable to sit on. Leather production these days is very sophisticated which enables manufacturers to create many looks to suit a wide variety of homes and styles. Leather is now more affordable and there are suites to suit all pockets. Leather can be cleaned and cared for, and when done properly, maintains a high level of appearance throughout its life.
Cleaning is an essential part of caring for your leather furniture. It not only removes dirt and oils (which can, over time, break down the leathers protective coating) but will also help to maintain the moisture balance in the leather. This is important for keeping the leather supple and makes it less likely to absorb spillages.
Because the leathers only have light surface protection they will also absorb dirt and spillages more readily, this will make cleaning less effective because dirt will only clean off the surface of leather not out of it.
Most consumers are forced to find out their own information on cleaning and care products as retailers generally give little or no maintenance instructions with their furniture. What information is given is often incorrect and misleading. ‘Low maintenance’ is often interpreted as ‘no maintenance’ This can cause great problems for the consumer as the products available on the market are often not well tested or backed up with clear product advice.
Leather Care
All our leather cleaning is done by hand, the only machine involved is the vacuum cleaner we use to remove surface dust from the furniture. This is followed by the application of a foaming cleaning solution which is applied to each area (an arm, cushion etc) of the furniture individually. This is wiped in a circular motion to loosen any ingrained dirt from the leather, followed by an application of leather protector, this helps prevents soiling & spillages absorbing into the leather.
During the cleaning process we will advise you of any areas of concern, these may be parts of the leather that have began to dry out by being in close proximity to heat or areas of damage i.e. cat scratches, burns, scuff marks etc. We can then advise you of the cost to repair any area of damage.
All of our cleaning & protection solutions are safe and the most up to date products available to us. Please ask about our products available to purchase.
To maintain the rich natural look of your leather furniture, we offer the following recommendations;
General Leather Care Tips
- Avoid using or placing sharp objects on leather goods, leather is very durable, but not accident or damage proof
- Dust or vacuum the surface of the leather weekly, this will remove light surface soiling.
- Avoid placing leather furniture near any heat source or in direct sunlight, this can lead to the leather drying out & cracking. Place the furniture a minimum of two feet away from radiators or other heat source.
- Blot up any spillages immediately. Never use saddle soaps, oils, baby wipes, all purpose cleaners or solvents. Use of these products could damage the finish and lead to costly repairs. Modern tanning techniques do not require such products, most spills should blot up easily with a dry cloth or paper towel.
- Clean your leather with an approved cleaning solution, monthly if the furniture is heavily used, but at least four times a year, followed by an application of leather protector. This should be done in conjunction with regular professional cleaning.
Curtain Cleaning
We spend a lot of our hard earned money on our curtains, looking for the right fabric, deciding on the type of curtain, do we want swags& tails, tie backs, pelmets or valances, then paying to get them made and fitted. Once we have done this, what do we do with them? Nothing, we just leave them hanging there, gathering dust, traffic pollution, stale odours etc. Just like your carpets, your curtains act as filters, trapping airborn particles & odours, this obviously affects the look of the curtain.
Many people leave there curtains for years before they even think about getting them cleaned, and then do nothing. The main reason we have found for this is the hassle involved in taking the curtains down, transporting them to the dry cleaners, being without the curtains for several days then having to rehang them.
Good News!
We have developed a system which allows us to clean your curtain insitu while they hang, so this means no heavy rehanging & no being left without curtains. We hand clean swags & tails and all types of fabric blinds. The dry cleaning system uses safe cleaning solutions applied either by hand or machine, leaving your curtains looking clean, bright & fresh.
Silks & tapestries can be cleaned using the same method.

Stain Protection
Your soft furnishings in your home are an important investment and obviously you want them to stay that way. Unfortunately accidents can and inevitably will happen and when they do, if left, a spill can result in a permanent stain.
No protector will make fabric or fibres 100% stain proof, but a good quality protector will give the maximum possible protection against stains.
How does it work?
|

|
|
fibres treated with stain protection
|
|

|
|
non treated fibre
|
The protector works by forming an invisible barrier around each individual fibre, this gives the fibres maximum protection against dirt, spill & stains. It prevents dry soil from sticking to the fibres, there vacuuming is more efficient in removing dry soil. It will help reduce abrasion to the fibres, one of the most common causes of wear, it will not change the look, feel, smell or colour of your carpet or upholstery. *Most spills will bead on the surface of the fibres giving you time to fetch a piece of kitchen towel and simply blot up the spill (see our spot removal guide).
The protector coats the fibres, it does not stop them from getting dirty, but it will stop the dirt sticking to them, making it easier to vacuum off. The protector will gradually wear off on heavily used areas, so will need to be re-protected at least every other clean.
